Have you been looking for a way to improve your relationship with your boyfriend.
If you’ve looked online you’ve probably come across some things that are impractical. While you may both enjoy getting away for a romantic getaway, you probably don’t have the time, and may not have the money.
However, this isn’t really a problem since romance is only on aspect of a healthy relationship. Sure, it’s important, but there are other things you need to consider if you want to have a happy long-term relationship with your boyfriend.
A great relationship is built on a strong foundation of trust and mutual respect. Working on strengthening this bond will do more to improve your relationship than a romantic gourmet dinner at your favorite restaurant.
Fortunately the things you need to do to improve your relationship with your boyfriend do not require talent or money, just a little time and effort.
1. Respect each other!
Mutual respect is an essential part of all of your relationship. To respect someone means to hold them in high or special regard. This doesn’t mean only when they’re around or only when you’re not upset with them.
Your boyfriend should expect to be treated with consideration and appreciation, and so should you. Respect is something you earn, and the easiest way to earn his respect is to respect him.
What can you do to improve the amount of respect in your relationship?
Pick someone you respect, such as your grandmother or a religious leader. Don’t say anything to your boyfriend that you wouldn’t say to that person. Don’t say anything behind his back that you wouldn’t say to his face.
If you slip up, apologize. Don’t let a insensitive remark end your relationship with your boyfriend.
2. Support each other!
One sign of a healthy relationship, is that both partners support each other in their endeavors. If you’ve ever had good news to share or something exciting happen, then you know how it feels to want to share. If you’ve ever had an idea shot down or been ignored when talking about something important to you, then you know how that rejection feels.
You and your boyfriend should never have to experience that rejection with each other. You should both be willing to take the time to be there for each other through the highs and lows.
What can you do to help us support each other as a couple?
Learn how to listen. Let your partner share his dreams, goals and ideas. Ask questions if you don’t understand. And even if you don’t love everything he wants to do, try to find a way to support his decisions. (As long as it’s legal, moral and ethical, whatever that means to you).
There may be flaws in his logic and you can point it out so he doesn’t have Wile E. Coyote moments. However whatever his final decision is, let him know you’ll be there for him.
3. Learn to let go!
This might be the most important step in improving your relationship with your boyfriend. How much change is really needed to improve your relationship? How many of the problems are more a matter of perception? Do you believe he needs to change? Do you think things could be better? Is there something about him or your relationship that irritates you?
What you may see as a problem, he may just consider part of being in a relationship. This can make any change you hope for difficult if not impossible. In the end you may need to ask yourself how important these changes really are.
What can you do to learn how to let go?
When you were dating you probably had a dealbreaker list. It may not have been a written list, but you knew what you did and did not want in a man or a relationship. Now’s the time to get that list out. If you narrowed that list down to the five most important things to you, how would your boyfriend measure up.
Realize those five things are what matters. Everything else is negotiable. Tell him how you feel about the things that bother you about your relationship. Make changes in the way YOU handle these situations. However, don’t try to MAKE him change. You can nag for years and only make things worse.
No matter what stage your relationship is in, these are things you can do to improve your relationship with your boyfriend. Remember by consistently doing these three things, respect, support and acceptance you will improve your relationship’s chances of long-term success.
